How a saju reading is actually built

Saju (사주, "four pillars") is Korean astrology, practiced on the peninsula for well over a thousand years and rooted in a calendar system older still. It does not read planets. It reads time itself – the year, month, day and hour you were born, each expressed as a pair of Chinese characters.

Four moments, two characters each: eight characters in all. That's the fuller name, 사주팔자 – four pillars, eight characters. Everything in a reading is derived from how those eight characters relate to each other.

The sexagenary calendar

Traditional East Asian timekeeping cycles through sixty units, built by pairing ten heavenly stems (천간, 天干) with twelve earthly branches (지지, 地支). Years cycle through the sixty pairs; so do months, days and two-hour blocks of the day. Your birth moment lands on one pair in each of the four cycles – those four pairs are your pillars.

Each stem and each branch carries one of the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, water – and a polarity, yin or yang. The twelve branches are also the twelve zodiac animals you may know from "year of the Dragon"; in saju the animal year is just one-eighth of the picture.

The day master

The stem of your day pillar is called the day master (일간). It is the character that stands for you; the rest of the chart is read in relation to it. A 丙 (yang fire) day master and a 癸 (yin water) day master born on the same afternoon get very different readings from the same surrounding characters – one is fed by them, the other drained.

Element balance and usefulness

Count the elements across all eight characters and a shape appears: most charts are heavy in one or two elements and thin or missing in another. The reading asks whether your day master is strong (well-supported by the chart) or weak (outnumbered), and from that derives the 용신 – the "useful element" your chart benefits from borrowing, in habits, environments, seasons and people.

Luck cycles: the moving part

The birth chart is fixed; time keeps moving. Saju overlays two moving cycles on the chart: the daeun (대운), a ten-year cycle that shifts which element dominates each decade of your life, and the seyun (세운), the character of each individual year. A chart starving for water experiences a water decade very differently from a fire-heavy one. This is where saju gets specific about timing – which years support you and which ask more of you.

What a reading is – and isn't

A saju reading describes structure and tendency: where your energy naturally goes, what drains it, what the current cycle rewards. It is a mirror and a map, not a verdict.
